One of the really cool things about Comic Chat is the characters the chatters use. If your program is configured correctly, you can automatically download any characters that are not in your comic art folder. That way you can view a chatter as they intend to represent themselves, via the AVB (character) they use. In order to view a character that the chatter has selected, you must have that AVB saved in your comic art folder.

A character must be posted somewhere on the Internet and have a valid URL (Uniform Resource Locator - a web page address) embedded in the character itself to download automatically.

Embedding a URL

If you have made a character, the last step before making your AVB file, is to add a URL. Go to 'file/properties' and you will see the image below.

The URL information you enter here must match exactly the web page address and the folder you plan to upload the character to.

For example, if your URL looks like this:

http://members.rogers.com/sniffles/characters/sniffles.avb

then you must have a folder called 'characters' on the site http://members.rogers.com/sniffles/, where your AVB file will be located. Remember that your character file must be posted on a valid web site to be downloadable in Comic Chat.

Replacing a URL

Many characters have "dead" URL's embedded in them. This means that the URL in the character's file no longer leads to an existing web site. The URL needs to be replaced, and to do this you will need a hex editor. A good freeware program is XVI32. This editor will be used in the example shown below.

Go to 'file/open', and select the character file you want to hex. It is always wise to make a back up copy of the AVB in case you make an error. Besides the URL, the Hex editor will show you the name of the author if they have included this information (in this case it is Tokachi) and any copyright restrictions.

In the image below, you will see the red arrow placed at the start of the embedded URL. Type in the new URL, using exactly the same number of spaces. The AVB extension is case sensitive so if the original file had lower case letters (.avb), then the updated AVB file must have a lower case extension as well.

The URL in the image below shows 47 (starting with the 'h' in http:) spaces. It is critical that the new one also have 47 spaces. You may have to create a new folder on your download site to get the number of spaces the same. If, by chance, you come across an AVB that has the address starting with FTP://, you would start the new URL where the 'F' is.

Once you have entered new URL information, go to 'file/save as' and select a destination folder. Your character should now download automatically in Comic Chat, once you have uploaded it to a website.
